Hokkaido dairy products hit the earthquake

2018-09-07

Food related, especially dairy products such as milk, are likely to have major impacts in the future due to the Hokkaido Earthquake.

A large cargo ship "Hokuren Maru" which carries a piston to Kushiro in Hokkaido and Hitachi in Ibaraki prefecture plans to leave Kushiro this evening. However, only the milk tank that I was able to load was collected for 5 days. On 6th we could not pick up the cargo. Whether it is possible to collect cargo after 7 days is undecided. When the raw milk arrives at Hitachi Port, it is sterilized at the factory of a dairy maker in the Kanto region and becomes milk. Milk must be delivered to dairy makers on the third day after squeezing.

Among the raw milk produced in Hokkaido, more than 10% are transported outside the road, the main force of which is a lamcoated circle. At the peak, it carries 1 million liters a day, 1 liter of milk carries 1 million cartons. As school meals are resumed in September, demand for raw milk will also increase.

Dairy farmers can not milk due to blackouts and milk can not be refrigerated at each dairymen. A dairy farm's refrigerating tank can store for 1 to 2 days, but can not be cooled without electricity. There seems to be a dairy farmer who secures electricity through private power generation.

Milking needs to be done twice a day, if the power outage continues and the state where it can not be milked continues, the health condition of the dairy cow is concerned. Milk collected from a dairy farmer needs to be cooled beforehand by a dedicated refrigeration facility before putting it on a ship, but for this purpose full-scale restoration of electricity is indispensable.
